Add Cloud Accounts to Your Android TV with a QR Code

Typing an email address and password with a TV remote is slow and frustrating — hunting for each letter on an on-screen keyboard, one click at a time. Cloudist Play and Cloudist Watch now skip that entirely: your Android TV or Google TV shows a QR code, and your phone does the rest. Scan it, pick an account, and your cloud storage shows up on the big screen in seconds.

What You Need

  • Cloudist (Play or Watch, matching the app you use on your TV) installed on an Android TV or Google TV device
  • Cloudist on an iPhone or Android phone — or, if you just want to scan with your camera, no app install is required for that first step
  • Both devices on the same Wi-Fi network
  • If you're on the free plan, note that the account limit still applies on the TV, so pairing can fail if the TV already has its maximum number of accounts

Step by Step

  1. On the TV, go to Settings → Accounts and select Add with phone. The TV shows a QR code under the heading Add with your phone, with the text: "Scan this code with your phone's camera or the Cloudist Play app. Both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi."
  2. On your phone, either open your system camera and point it at the code, or open Cloudist and go to Settings → Accounts → Send to TV, then use the in-app scanner (Scan the TV code).
  3. Your phone shows a list of your existing cloud accounts. Pick one to send, or choose Add a new account to sign in fresh and send that instead.
  4. The TV displays "Added: {name}" once the account arrives, then asks "Start a full scan of {name} now?" with Later and Start full scan options.
  5. Repeat from step 1 with Add another account, or select Done to finish.

The code on the TV screen isn't static — it refreshes on its own ("New code in {seconds}s"), so if you take too long to scan, just wait for the next one.

Which Accounts Can You Send?

Every cloud account type can be sent to the TV except Local (which, by definition, only exists on the device it was added on).

For Google Drive, Box and Yandex Disk, sending an account to the TV creates a fresh sign-in made specifically for the TV. That means the TV ends up with its own access and refreshes it independently, without depending on your phone staying signed in. For every other provider, the TV shares the phone's existing sign-in.

If you send an account that's already on the TV, Cloudist just updates its tokens rather than adding a duplicate — useful if an account on the TV ever needs a refresh.

How Your Account Stays Private

Pairing is built to stay inside your home network, not to depend on trusting anyone else's server with your credentials in transit.

  • The TV only listens for pairing connections on a private network address (the kind your router hands out at home), and it rejects anything that isn't coming from your local network.
  • The two devices agree on a shared secret using X25519 key exchange, a method where neither device ever sends its private key anywhere.
  • That shared secret is then run through HKDF-SHA256, which turns it into the actual encryption key used for the session.
  • Everything sent between your phone and TV is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, which also detects if anything in transit was tampered with.
  • Each pairing session lasts 5 minutes, is used up the moment it succeeds once, and locks out after 5 failed attempts.
  • When you scan the QR code with your phone's camera instead of the in-app scanner, it opens a universal link (https://play.fromcloud.ist/pair#… for Play, https://watch.fromcloud.ist/pair#… for Watch). The actual pairing secret lives after the # in that link — in the URL fragment — which browsers never transmit to any server, including ours. The link itself can't be used to connect to your TV without your phone completing the exchange.

No App on Your Phone Yet?

If you scan the TV's QR code with your phone's camera before installing Cloudist, the link opens a plain landing page instead of pairing anything. That page just shows store buttons so you can download the app, then start the pairing flow for real from inside it.

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing happens after scanning, or the TV never sees your phone: Check that both devices are actually on the same Wi-Fi network. A guest network, or a VPN running on the phone, may block devices on the same network from reaching each other even when both show the same Wi-Fi name.
  • The code on the TV changed before you finished scanning: Codes expire and refresh on their own. Just scan the new one.
  • "This TV has reached its account limit.": Your current plan caps how many accounts a TV can hold. Use the Upgrade option shown on that screen, or remove an existing account first.
  • "This account type isn't supported by this app version. Update the app.": The TV app is running a version that doesn't yet know about that provider. Update Cloudist on the TV from the Play Store and try again.
