How to Stream Videos from Nextcloud to Your Phone

Nextcloud is one of the best self-hosted cloud platforms, but watching videos stored on your Nextcloud server from your phone has always been frustrating. The Nextcloud mobile app can play videos, but it downloads the entire file first — no streaming, no playlists, no proper player controls.

Why Nextcloud's Built-in Video Playback Falls Short

The Nextcloud mobile app treats videos as files, not media. When you tap a video:

  • It downloads the entire file before playback starts
  • There's no queue or playlist functionality
  • No way to organize videos into collections
  • Limited format support
  • No background picture-in-picture mode

For a quick clip, this is fine. But if you have a large video library on your Nextcloud server, you need a dedicated video player.

The Solution: WebDAV + Cloudist Watch

Since Nextcloud supports the WebDAV protocol, you can connect any WebDAV-compatible video player to your server. Cloudist Watch is designed exactly for this.

Step 1: Get Your Nextcloud WebDAV URL

Your Nextcloud WebDAV URL follows this pattern:

https://your-nextcloud-domain.com/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/

Replace your-nextcloud-domain.com with your actual Nextcloud domain and USERNAME with your Nextcloud username.

Step 2: Download Cloudist Watch

Step 3: Add Your Nextcloud Account

Open Cloudist Watch → "Add Account" → "WebDAV". Enter your WebDAV URL, username, and password (or app-specific password if you have 2FA enabled).

Step 4: Browse and Watch

The app scans your Nextcloud storage for video files and presents them in a clean library view. You get:

  • Direct streaming — no need to download the full file first
  • Folder browser — navigate your Nextcloud folders naturally
  • Playlist support — organize videos into playlists
  • Offline downloads — save videos for watching without internet
  • 10 video formats — MP4, MKV, WebM, AVI, MOV, M4V, FLV, WMV, TS, 3GP

Does It Work with Other Self-Hosted Platforms?

Yes! Any platform that supports WebDAV will work:

  • Nextcloud & ownCloud
  • Synology NAS (via WebDAV Server package)
  • QNAP NAS (via WebDAV app)
  • Any standard WebDAV server

What About Google Drive and Dropbox?

Cloudist Watch also supports Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox. You can connect multiple accounts — both cloud services and self-hosted — and browse everything from a single app.

Security Considerations

When connecting to your Nextcloud server:

  • Use HTTPS (not HTTP) for your WebDAV URL
  • Consider creating an app-specific password instead of using your main password
  • Cloudist Watch stores credentials locally on your device — they're never sent to any third-party server

Summary

If you're running Nextcloud and want to stream videos to your phone without downloading them first, Cloudist Watch with WebDAV gives you a proper video player experience. Add your WebDAV URL, and your self-hosted storage becomes a personal video streaming service.
